PLAIN QUANTUM

Privacy

Here is what happens to information about you when you use the site, checked against the site's code.

In short

  • There are no accounts, sign-ups, comment forms or advertising.
  • The site's own code sets no cookies. It stores something in your browser only if you turn on Recall reviews, and then only on your device.
  • What you type into the tools is worked out in your browser and is not sent anywhere by the site.
  • Two outside services see your visit in the ordinary way websites work: Cloudflare, which hosts the pages, and Google, which serves the typefaces.
  • Cloudflare also counts page views for the site, using its Web Analytics service. It sets no cookies and stores nothing on your device (see Page-view analytics).

Page-view analytics

The site's own code contains no analytics or tracking script. The host, Cloudflare, has its Web Analytics service switched on for this site, using its automatic setup: as each page is served, Cloudflare adds a small script of its own that reports how the page loaded.

  • What it sends: the address of the page, the page you came from (the referrer), and timing measurements of how quickly the page loaded and settled, from your browser's standard Performance interface.
  • What it doesn't do: according to Cloudflare, the script sets no cookies, doesn't read or write anything stored on your device, and doesn't track you across other websites.
  • Your IP address: Cloudflare receives it as part of the request, and says it discards it at the nearest data centre rather than storing it in its databases or logs.
  • What the site's owner sees: totals, such as page views and visits, broken down by page, referring site, country, browser, operating system and device type. The owner doesn't see individual visitors.

Cloudflare describes the data in its documentation for the Web Analytics script. Blocking scripts from static.cloudflareinsights.com stops it and doesn't affect anything else on the site.

Separately, Cloudflare's dashboard gives the site's owner traffic totals, such as numbers of requests, drawn from its own servers.

Hosting

Plain Quantum is served by Cloudflare. Like any web host, it receives your device's internet (IP) address and the page requested in order to deliver the page and to protect the site from abuse.

Fonts

The site's typefaces, Poppins, Source Serif 4 and IBM Plex Mono, are loaded from Google Fonts, so your browser requests them from Google's servers, which receive your IP address. Google describes what it collects in its Google Fonts privacy FAQ. The typefaces used in diagrams are served by this site.

Calculators, assessments and the Toolkit

The Mosca calculator, the readiness self-assessment and the Quantum Strategy Selector do their calculations in your browser. Their code makes no network requests, so your answers are not sent to Plain Quantum or anyone else. Nothing is saved: closing or reloading the page clears your answers.

  • Saving a Strategy Selector assessment downloads a file to your own device. Importing one reads that file in your browser; it isn't uploaded.
  • Copy buttons on the templates write to your clipboard only when you press them.
  • Without JavaScript the tools don't run, and their forms don't send anything.

Search runs in your browser against a list of the site's pages that downloads with the search page. What you type is kept only after the "#" in the address, a part that browsers never send to a website, so it doesn't reach the host or its logs.

Source lists link to standards bodies, journals and companies. Those sites have their own privacy policies. Links open in a new tab, and the site sends them only its own address, not the page you were reading.

Email

If you email hello@plainquantum.com, your message is used only to reply and to improve the site. It isn't added to a mailing list or shared.

Recall reviews

Recall is an optional way to revisit a few key ideas at spaced intervals. It's off unless you choose Save my reviews on this device.

  • What's stored, and where: for each question you've answered, the date, whether you recalled it, and when it's next due, in your browser's local storage under one key, pq.recall.v1. No answer text, no chosen option and nothing that identifies you.
  • Nothing is sent anywhere. Your reviews never leave your browser; the site has no account system and collects no data about your answers, even in total.
  • You control it: pause reviews (everything is kept), export them as a file, or delete them, from Your reviews. Clearing your browser's site data also removes them.

Changes to this page

Any new feature that stores information, such as optional review reminders, will be described here before it launches, and will be off unless you turn it on.
